Group Project: Laboratory Safety

All employees of Schulich School of Engineering are responsible to assist in the health, safety and well-being of University of Calgary employees, students, visitors and contractors. One essential aspect of this safety is to ensure proper safety equipment and information is available in All Teaching and Research areas.

The following list is the minimum safety related equipment and documentation necessary to provide an appropriate level of safety in each Laboratory space:

- Laboratory specific Safety Manual, usually located near entrance way.

- Sharps Container, mounted in a visible location.

- Safety information posted on door leading into the Area (see FORMS).

- Fire Extinguisher, be sure the type is right for Lab conditions.

First Aid Kit, consider the size related to the number of occupants.

- Building Evacuation Plan posted on inside of door.

- Emergency Procedures Documentation posted by phone (see FORMS).

- Emergency Phone, located in a visible location..

- WHMIS data sheet storage binder, located in a visible location.

- Safety signs posted near auxiliary safety equipment (showers, eyewash stations, etc)

  • Think of this wiki as a shared online whiteboard.
  • Project group members are able to share information regarding their assigned spaces to check and improve them.
  • All laboratories, undergraduate and research, must provide the necessary safety information and equipment as set out in University of Calgary Safety Guidlines.
  • Some additional non-laboratory areas may be included to enhance public safety and awareness.
  • Members will be able to contribute helpful ideas and suggestions on all safety issues.

Electrical and Computer Engineering department spans two buildings (EN A and ICT), reports containing specific safety issues are included for Laboratories and specific area. Included in each report is information on the stakeholders for the area and/or the first line contact person. In most cases the ECE Technical Manager is also a main contact person. In areas where no particular stakeholder is assigned the ECE department head or SSE Vice-President is a contact person.
